"You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down" Pirates Legend Tso Vilakazi Defends Appollis Amid Pirates Benchings

Orlando Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi has come to the defence of Oswin Appollis following growing questions about the winger’s recent lack of playing time at the Soweto giants.

Appollis, who is currently in his third season at Orlando Pirates, has experienced limited game time in recent weeks, raising questions among supporters about his role and position in the team. His reduced involvement has also sparked discussions about whether the winger has fallen out of favour with the technical team or is facing increased competition for a regular place in the starting line-up.

However, former Pirates captain and club legend Vilakazi believes that the situation should not necessarily be interpreted as a decline in the player's quality. Instead, he has suggested that confidence could be playing an important role in Appollis' recent struggles to secure consistent minutes on the pitch.

Speaking during an appearance on the Omni Audio podcast, Vilakazi made a strong statement in defence of the winger, insisting that talented footballers cannot be written off simply because they are experiencing a difficult period in their careers.

“Let me say something that will make everyone think and talk – you can’t bring a good man down,” Vilakazi said.

His comments reflect his belief that Appollis still possesses the qualities required to make a significant contribution to Orlando Pirates, despite his recent absence from the starting line-up.

The former Buccaneers midfielder's intervention comes at a time when competition for places at the club remains intense. Orlando Pirates have assembled a squad with considerable depth and quality, meaning players must consistently demonstrate their value to earn opportunities.

For attacking players such as Appollis, maintaining confidence and rhythm can be particularly important. Wingers depend on regular involvement to develop their understanding with teammates, build momentum and express themselves in one-on-one situations.

A lack of regular playing time can therefore affect a player's confidence, especially when expectations are high and supporters are constantly assessing performances.

Nevertheless, Appollis remains a player with the potential to influence matches through his attacking qualities, movement and ability to create opportunities. His situation could change quickly if he receives another opportunity to impress the coaching staff.

Vilakazi's remarks also highlight an important reality in professional football: being left out of the starting eleven does not automatically mean a player has lost his ability or become surplus to requirements.

At a club with the ambitions of Orlando Pirates, squad rotation, tactical decisions and competition for positions are part of the demands of challenging for major honours.

The Buccaneers will need contributions from several players throughout the campaign, particularly as they balance domestic competitions with their continental ambitions.

For Appollis, the immediate challenge will be to remain focused, maintain his confidence and make the most of whatever opportunities come his way.

Vilakazi's public support could also provide encouragement to the winger as he seeks to regain a more prominent role in the team.

While questions remain about when Appollis will return to regular action, the message from the Pirates legend is clear: a temporary spell on the sidelines should not be mistaken for the end of a player's quality or potential.
