Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have finally got their CAF Women’s Champions League campaign up and running after recording an important 2-1 victory over Lekie Football Filles on Wednesday afternoon.
The South African giants secured their first three points of the competition with a hard-fought win in their Group A encounter at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.
After failing to get the desired result in their opening fixture, Sundowns Ladies knew that Wednesday's meeting presented an important opportunity to strengthen their position in the group and keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.
The Brazilians showed determination and attacking intent against their Cameroonian opponents, eventually doing enough to claim all three points. Although Lekie Football Filles managed to find the back of the net, Sundowns Ladies maintained their advantage to secure a 2-1 victory.
The result will provide a major confidence boost for the South African representatives, who entered the tournament with expectations of competing for the continental title.
Sundowns Ladies have established themselves as one of the strongest women's football teams in Africa over the years. Their experience in the competition and previous success at continental level make them one of the sides to watch in this year's tournament.
However, the competition remains challenging, and the team will understand that consistency will be important if they are to reach the final and compete for another major African honour.
Wednesday's victory represents an important step in the right direction. The players will now turn their attention to their remaining group matches, knowing that further positive results could strengthen their chances of securing qualification for the next stage.
For the Sundowns Ladies supporters, the 2-1 victory is a welcome result as the Brazilians look to make another strong statement on the African stage.
