Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi and AmaZulu forward Athini Maqokolo have emerged as the early leaders in the Betway Premiership Man of the Match awards race for the 2026/27 season.

Both players have collected three Man of the Match awards each, underlining their impressive individual contributions to their respective teams during the opening stages of the campaign.

Mokobodi's performances for Orlando Pirates have placed him among the standout players in the competition. His consistency and influence have helped him attract individual recognition while representing the Soweto giants.

Meanwhile, Maqokolo has also enjoyed an encouraging campaign with AmaZulu, matching Mokobodi's tally of three awards.

The AmaZulu star's achievements highlight his growing importance to the Durban-based club as he continues to make his mark in the league.

With both players currently sitting at the top of the standings, the competition for individual recognition is expected to intensify as the season progresses.

The Man of the Match award recognises outstanding performances in individual fixtures, making the race an interesting measure of players who have consistently influenced games.

Although the campaign is still underway, Mokobodi and Maqokolo have already set an impressive standard.

Attention will now turn to whether either player can pull clear of the other or if new contenders will emerge in the coming weeks.
