Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has expressed his admiration for midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi, predicting a bright future for the youngster following his impressive performances for the Buccaneers.
Ouaddou revealed that he was already familiar with Mokobodi before the midfielder joined Pirates, having followed his development during his time at Marumo Gallants.
The coach explained that he was delighted when the Soweto giants secured the player's services because he understood the qualities he could bring to the team.
Speaking about his knowledge of the midfielder, Ouaddou said: "Look Mokobodi, I know him from Marumo Gallants, "I was just so happy that the club brought him here to Pirates, and I knew what he could bring.
"I predict a great future for this boy. And he's definitely one of the best midfielders in the country."
The comments provide an insight into why Ouaddou has such confidence in Mokobodi. His familiarity with the player from their previous football environment allowed him to recognise his potential before he became part of the Pirates squad.
Mokobodi has attracted considerable attention following his recent performances, particularly his display in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs. His contribution during the 2-1 victory earned him praise from supporters and former players, further increasing expectations surrounding his development.
Ouaddou's assessment also highlights the importance of identifying players who can contribute both immediately and in the long term. The coach believes Mokobodi possesses the ability to become an important figure in South African football.
For Orlando Pirates, having a midfielder who already enjoys the confidence of the head coach could prove valuable as the club continues its campaign.
However, the youngster will need to maintain his performances and continue developing if he is to fulfil the expectations surrounding his future.
