Monnapule Saleng is back in competitive action, and it's a small but meaningful step for the winger at Mamelodi Sundowns. He came off the bench in the 1-0 Carling Knockout Cup win over Marumo Gallants on Tuesday night, his first appearance since March. Siyanda Ndlovu's first-half goal did the damage for Sundowns, but Saleng's cameo became one of the talking points after the final whistle.
It hasn't been easy for the former Orlando Pirates star at Chloorkop. Questions have swirled about his place in the team and whether he can meet the standards of the technical staff. Coach Miguel Cardoso's decision to bring him on suggests the door is still open, and the Portuguese tactician has repeatedly stressed trust, consistency and professionalism when talking about the 28-year-old.
Fans know what Saleng can do when he's on song. At Pirates, he was one of the most exciting attacking players in the Premier Soccer League, beating defenders, creating chances and delivering dangerous crosses. Sundowns will be hoping that version of him returns and adds some creativity to a squad competing on several fronts.
Still, one short appearance doesn't guarantee a spot in the starting line-up. Saleng will need to rebuild his match fitness, keep his training standards high and make the most of any further chances.
This could be the start of a fresh chapter for him, or just another brief spell in a difficult season. Either way, the answer will come on the pitch.
So what did you make of Saleng's return? Does he deserve more minutes at Sundowns, or does he still have plenty to prove? Let us know in the comments below.
