Mamelodi Sundowns have reclaimed top spot in the Betway Premiership standings after recording an emphatic 4-1 victory over Durban City at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday night.
The Brazilians produced an impressive attacking performance, with defender Thabang Matuludi stealing the spotlight after scoring twice to help Miguel Cardoso's side collect maximum points.
The victory was particularly important for Sundowns after Orlando Pirates had temporarily moved to the top of the standings following their 2-1 Soweto Derby triumph over Kaizer Chiefs earlier in the afternoon.
Sundowns responded in convincing fashion, showing their determination to remain involved in the title race as the 2026/27 campaign continues.
The hosts started positively and created several opportunities before eventually breaking the deadlock in the 32nd minute.
Matuludi rose highest inside the penalty area to connect with Marcelo Allende's corner, directing a powerful header beyond Durban City goalkeeper Fredrick Asare.
It was a special moment for the defender, who was beginning to make his presence felt in the Sundowns colours following his arrival from Polokwane City.
Durban City attempted to respond after the interval, but Sundowns maintained their attacking intensity and continued putting pressure on the visitors' defence.
Matuludi doubled the advantage in the 64th minute, once again finding the net with a header. This time, the defender benefited from an excellent delivery by Aubrey Modiba, completing his brace and putting Masandawana firmly in control.
The goal also underlined his growing value in attacking set-piece situations, giving Cardoso another potential weapon when his team faces opponents defending deep.
Sundowns continued to create opportunities, with Asare producing important saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming even more uncomfortable for Durban City.
However, the visitors eventually conceded a third goal in the 78th minute when Iqraam Rayners converted from close range after a precise low delivery from Siyanda Ndlovu.
Durban City managed to pull one back seven minutes later through Jean Lubumba, who controlled Samkelo Maseko's cross before firing into the net.
Despite the late consolation, Sundowns had the final say. Antonio Van Wyk broke forward in added time and finished from a tight angle to complete the 4-1 victory.
The result takes Sundowns to 26 points from 10 matches, putting them one point ahead of second-placed Pirates, who have played one match fewer.
For Cardoso, the victory provides an important response after a difficult period that included the club's elimination from the CAF Champions League.
Matuludi, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from his first two goals for the club. His performance demonstrated that his contribution could extend beyond defensive responsibilities.
