Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has accepted responsibility for his decision to deploy Deon Hotto at right-back during the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
Hotto, who is naturally left-footed, was selected in an unfamiliar position as Pirates prepared for their important clash against their traditional rivals. However, Ouaddou admitted that the tactical decision did not produce the desired outcome.
The Pirates coach explained that he opted for experience when making his selection but later recognised that the team missed some of the attacking qualities that another option could have provided.
"I decided to put an experienced guy there, but it didn't work properly, and we didn't have the depth, we didn't have the runs in behind like \[Kamogelo\] Sebelebele can have, like a right full-back can have on that side."
His comments suggest that the decision was influenced by the need for an experienced player in the defensive position. Nevertheless, the coach acknowledged that the arrangement affected the team's ability to create attacking opportunities from the right side.
Kamogelo Sebelebele was specifically mentioned as a player capable of providing the forward runs and attacking depth that Pirates lacked in that position.
Ouaddou's admission is significant because coaches are often questioned over their tactical decisions, particularly in high-profile matches such as the Soweto Derby. By openly discussing the selection, he has accepted that his approach did not work as intended.
Despite the tactical concern, Orlando Pirates managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs, giving their supporters an important derby result.
The coach will now have to consider his options at right-back as the Buccaneers continue their campaign, with the balance between defensive experience and attacking contribution remaining an important factor.
