Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has commended Evidence Makgopa for seizing his opportunity after the striker excelled in their 4-0 triumph over Africa Stars in the CAF Champions League.
Makgopa scored two goals and assisted another in the second leg of their preliminary tie at Orlando Stadium on Friday, which resulted in a 5-0 aggregate win and secured the Pirates' spot in the Champions League group stage for the second time in three seasons.
The 26-year-old forward had been sidelined for much of the early season due to injury, yet he showcased his talent when given the opportunity, resulting in Ouaddou expressing satisfaction with his performance and providing the coach with additional options as they approach the group stage.
Ouaddou noted that Makgopa had not been a regular starter since last season, making his display all the more impressive. The coach praised the striker’s movement, his knack for finding space, and his facilitation of team attacks.
He also emphasized the need for Makgopa to enhance his ability to maintain possession under pressure. According to Ouaddou, the striker adhered to his tactics, enabling his teammates to make runs and receive the ball in threatening positions.
Furthermore, the Pirates coach expressed enthusiasm over the fact that multiple forwards are contributing to the goal tally, citing Boitumelo Radiopane, Yanela Mbuthuma, Sebastian Pedersen, and Sifiso Luthuli as part of his attacking options.
Having various players capable of scoring will be crucial as Pirates prepare for the challenges of the CAF Champions League group stage. Ouaddou is optimistic that the squad's depth will allow for player rotation and provide more individuals the opportunity to shine.
In light of Mamelodi Sundowns’ exit from the competition, Ouaddou has voiced his confidence in his team’s prospects for clinching the CAF Champions League title. He believes that Sundowns' departure has opened a window for Pirates to strive for continental success. The Buccaneers are keen on adding a second CAF Champions League star to their jersey, feeling that this season offers a stronger chance of achieving that goal.
The Pirates will look to build on their impressive performance against Africa Stars as they enter the group stage, with Makgopa's return to form potentially critical as the Soweto giants aim for success both on the African stage and in domestic competitions.
