Chelsea Pile More Misery on Carrick as Manchester United Crisis Deepens
Manchester United’s difficult spell under Michael Carrick continued on Saturday afternoon after Chelsea claimed a 2-0 victory over the Red Devils in their Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The defeat extended United’s winless run in all competitions to nine matches, further increasing the pressure on Carrick as questions continue to emerge about his ability to turn the club’s fortunes around.
United travelled to London desperately needing a positive result after a disappointing sequence of performances. However, despite showing encouraging attacking intent during the opening half, they were unable to make their opportunities count and eventually paid the price for their shortcomings.
Carrick restored captain Bruno Fernandes to the starting line-up, hoping his experience and creativity would help United overcome their struggles. Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo also featured prominently as the visitors looked to take control of the encounter.
United created several promising opportunities before the break. Cunha thought he had opened the scoring, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Fernandes and Amad also had opportunities to put the visitors ahead, but Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders helped keep the score level.
Chelsea struggled to impose themselves during the first half, with United arguably creating the more dangerous chances. However, the home side returned from the interval with greater purpose and eventually found the breakthrough.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring four minutes into the second half with an impressive individual effort. The Chelsea attacker drove through the middle of the United defence before lifting the ball beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens to give the hosts a crucial advantage.
The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Chelsea’s favour, while United suddenly found themselves chasing the game.
Their task became considerably more difficult in the 63rd minute when Lisandro Martinez was sent off. The Argentine defender received a second yellow card following an incident involving Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, leaving Manchester United with 10 players.
The incident also resulted in a penalty for Chelsea, with Cole Palmer stepping forward to convert from the spot and double the home side’s advantage.
United struggled to recover from the setback, with Chelsea comfortably managing the closing stages to secure all three points.
For Carrick, the result represents another major disappointment in an increasingly challenging period. The nine-match winless sequence is Manchester United’s longest such run since 1988, highlighting the scale of the club’s current difficulties.
The pressure on the manager has continued to grow, particularly after United's previous setbacks. Their position in the Premier League standings has also become increasingly concerning, with the club provisionally sitting 16th on seven points from nine matches, just one point above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Chelsea will take considerable confidence from the victory. The three points move the Blues into fourth place with 16 points, providing a welcome boost after their recent struggles.
Manchester United must now find a way to respond before their situation deteriorates further. With another demanding fixture approaching, Carrick will need his players to rediscover their confidence and produce a much-improved performance.
