Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Hleza Mofedi has explained why the Buccaneers' Carling Knockout Last 16 encounter against Milford FC could be more important than the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

With excitement building ahead of the derby, Pirates must first focus on navigating their cup assignment against Milford FC. The knockout competition presents an important opportunity for the Soweto giants to strengthen their ambitions of collecting silverware this season.

Mofedi's comments have highlighted the importance of approaching each match according to its immediate demands rather than allowing the excitement surrounding the derby to distract the team from its current responsibilities.

Although the Soweto Derby remains one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar, cup matches carry their own pressure because a single defeat can end a club's hopes of winning the competition.

For Pirates, progressing beyond Milford FC would be a significant step towards securing a place in the next round of the Carling Knockout. The team will therefore need to maintain its concentration and deliver a strong performance.

The debate raises an interesting question among supporters: should Pirates prioritise their cup ambitions before turning their attention to their fierce rivals, Kaizer Chiefs?

Ultimately, the Buccaneers must balance their immediate knockout challenge with the expectations surrounding the Soweto Derby.
