Manchester City’s impressive start to the Premier League season has suffered a significant setback after they were beaten 1-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
The defeat marked City's second consecutive league loss under manager Enzo Maresca, following their 2-1 defeat away to Aston Villa last weekend. Having opened the campaign with seven successive victories, the reigning title contenders have now experienced their first difficult spell of the season.
Brighton secured all three points through Yasin Ayari, whose first-half strike proved decisive in an entertaining contest. The midfielder capitalised on a defensive error in the 11th minute after Matheus Nunes failed to deal effectively with a dangerous ball into the penalty area.
The loose ball fell kindly for Ayari, who made no mistake from close range to put the visitors ahead.
City immediately attempted to respond, enjoying long spells of possession and pushing Brighton deeper into their own half. However, despite their attacking quality, the hosts struggled to turn their dominance into clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Iliman Ndiaye came close to restoring parity when his effort struck the woodwork, while Erling Haaland also threatened from a corner. Jeremy Doku provided another attacking outlet with his pace and direct running, but Brighton's defensive organisation made life difficult for the home side.
The visitors were particularly impressive after the interval, showing determination and discipline as City increased the pressure.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen played a crucial role in protecting the advantage, producing several important saves to frustrate the hosts. City registered 21 attempts, with only six finding the target, highlighting their lack of efficiency in front of goal.
Nico O'Reilly also missed a late opportunity when his header went narrowly wide, leaving Maresca's men without a response despite their sustained second-half pressure.
The result was historic for Brighton, who celebrated their first-ever Premier League victory away to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Seagulls also strengthened their position in the upper section of the table, moving to 19 points after nine matches.
For City, the defeat raises questions about their recent defensive performances and their ability to convert territorial dominance into goals. Haaland's remarkable run of scoring in seven consecutive Premier League matches also came to an end.
Despite the back-to-back setbacks, City remain on 21 points and are still top of the standings for now. However, Arsenal, who have a game in hand, could move above them if they avoid defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.
