Orlando Pirates moved to the Betway Premiership summit with a tense 2–1 Soweto Derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday — but the match and the result sparked intense debate across social media.
Yanela Mbuthuma gave Pirates an early lead in the 24th minute, before a rare error from goalkeeper Sipho Chaine allowed Pule Mmodi to level just before half-time. Tshepang Moremi restored the Buccaneers’ advantage ten minutes into the second half, and despite late pressure, Chiefs could not find another reply. Inaco Miguel was shown a red card in stoppage time for a second bookable offence, compounding a difficult afternoon for Amakhosi.
The game drew strong reactions from fans on both sides. Some Chiefs supporters felt key decisions went against them, with one writing: “Offside goal and second yellow not given — two massive calls went against us.” Others praised the performance, saying: “This is the best Chiefs have played in a derby for a while.”
Pirates followers were far from unanimous in their praise, however. “This is the worst I have seen Orlando Pirates play in a derby,” one fan tweeted, while another criticised the team’s style: “Back passes and short passes — you’re giving Chiefs hope they can beat us.” Even in victory, the consensus was clear: Pirates got the three points, but there is plenty for both sets of supporters to discuss before the next meeting.
