Zuko Mdunyelwa could find himself facing an important decision about his career as Mamelodi Sundowns assess their options at right-back, with a possible departure at the end of the season reportedly under consideration.
The 27-year-old has endured a difficult period after picking up an injury that kept him out of Sundowns’ matchday squads for several weeks. Although indications are that he has recovered and is working to regain his place, the competition for the position has become increasingly demanding.
Thabang Matuludi’s arrival from Polokwane City has added another challenge for the former Chippa United defender. Matuludi has made an encouraging start in Tshwane and recently delivered a performance that strengthened his case for regular selection.
The right-back scored twice in Sundowns’ 4-1 victory over Durban City at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on October 31. His two headed goals helped the Brazilians secure all three points and demonstrated the attacking contribution he can offer from defence.
Matuludi has particularly benefited from the absence of Khuliso Mudau, who remains an important figure in Sundowns’ right-back plans. His performances have given the technical team another option, while experienced defender Thapelo Morena has also been used in the position when rotation is required.
Mudau’s anticipated return in early 2027 could make the situation even more complicated for Mdunyelwa. With several players competing for the same position, securing consistent playing time may become difficult.
According to Soccer Laduma, Sundowns could consider allowing Mdunyelwa to pursue regular football elsewhere. However, an immediate departure during the January transfer window is considered unlikely, with the possibility of an exit at the end of the campaign appearing more realistic.
The situation remains at an early stage, and no final decision on the defender’s future has been announced. Mdunyelwa is reportedly determined to fight for his place, but the club’s growing options at right-back could influence discussions about his long-term role.
For now, his ability to regain match fitness and convince the technical team may prove important as Sundowns weigh their defensive options for the remainder of the season.
