Kaizer Chiefs Coach Faces Criticism Over Tactical Decisions in Derby

Chiefs Supporter Calls for Da Cruz’s Dismissal After Furious Criticism of Derby Decisions

A frustrated Kaizer Chiefs supporter has called for head coach Fernando Da Cruz to be dismissed following the club’s Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates, expressing dissatisfaction with his substitutions and overall match management.

The supporter did not hold back in assessing Da Cruz’s performance, describing the coach as a “plumber” and arguing that his decisions contributed to Chiefs’ struggles during the encounter.

Orlando Pirates defeated Chiefs 2-1 in the Soweto Derby, leaving the Amakhosi supporter questioning why the technical team appeared reluctant to make changes despite the team trailing.

One of the major concerns raised was the difference in the number of substitutions made by the two technical teams. The supporter pointed out that Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou had already introduced four players while Da Cruz was criticised for not making changes quickly enough.

The supporter also questioned the decision to substitute Vilakazi while other players, including Mako, were allegedly left on the pitch. The selection and defensive decisions involving Dortley and Miguel also came under criticism.

In a particularly strong statement, the supporter urged the Chiefs leadership to consider replacing Da Cruz with Manqoba Mkhize, insisting that a different technical approach could have produced a better result.

“Kaizer Chiefs, please FIRE this Plumber, bring Manqoba Mkhize, he would have won this game 3-0 simple. There is no Coach here,” the supporter wrote.

The criticism also extended to the perceived lack of urgency from the Chiefs bench. The supporter argued that Da Cruz should have recognised when players were tiring and made timely substitutions to give the team fresh energy.

Although the comments represent the frustration of an individual supporter rather than an official position from the club, they reflect the disappointment surrounding Chiefs’ derby defeat.

For Da Cruz, the result and the subsequent criticism add to the pressure that naturally comes with leading one of South Africa’s most closely followed football clubs. Expectations remain high at Naturena, and supporters will be looking for a response in the team's upcoming fixtures.

However, whether the Chiefs hierarchy shares the supporter’s assessment remains unclear. For now, the focus will be on how Da Cruz and his players respond after losing one of the biggest matches on the domestic football calendar.
