Hlungwani Weighs In on Soweto Derby Controversy: Appollis' Goal Should Have Been Disallowed

Former referee Victor Hlungwani has weighed in on the controversial goal involving Orlando Pirates winger Oswin Appollis during the Soweto Derby, offering his interpretation of the incident and explaining why the goal should have been allowed to stand.

The Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates once again generated plenty of debate, with the officiating and a key goal attracting attention from supporters and football observers.

The incident involving Appollis became a major talking point, particularly among fans who questioned whether the Pirates attacker was in an offside position when the goal was scored.

However, Hlungwani, a former referee who regularly provides analysis of controversial refereeing decisions, explained that the goal was legitimate under the FIFA Laws of the Game.

According to Hlungwani, the positioning of Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika played a crucial role in determining whether Appollis was onside or offside.

He pointed out that Kwinika was positioned in a way that kept the Pirates winger onside, meaning there was no infringement that could justify disallowing the goal.

"We have Kwinika there putting Appollis onside. So this goal was scored in line with the FIFA laws of the game. A goal should have been allowed," the former referee concluded.

Hlungwani's explanation suggests that the defensive positioning of the Chiefs players was an important factor in the decision, rather than simply looking at Appollis' position in isolation.

His assessment is likely to fuel further discussions among supporters of both Soweto giants, especially given the intensity and importance of the derby.

For Orlando Pirates, the explanation provides support for the legitimacy of the goal, while Kaizer Chiefs supporters may continue to scrutinise the incident.

As expected with one of South African football's biggest rivalries, controversial decisions remain part of the conversation long after the final whistle.
