Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou was full of praise for his players but also honest about the contest after his side secured a hard-fought 2–1 Soweto Derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday. Goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi sealed all three points, with Pule Mmodi equalising for Chiefs midway through the first half following an unusual error from Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
Ouaddou acknowledged that Amakhosi were the stronger team in the opening period, creating several clear opportunities they could not convert. “Kaizer Chiefs had the first half — unfortunately they didn’t take the chances,” he told SuperSport TV. “Every team had its half.”
The second half was a different story. Ouaddou made both tactical and personnel changes, and Pirates took control. “We saw the real face of Pirates in the second half — resilient, solid, able to play and to score. These are the values of this club,” he said. “I am really proud of the players.”
The victory arrived just in time for Ouaddou’s 48th birthday on 1 November — a gift he described as “fantastic.” “Well done to the boys, well done to the fans — they deserve this,” he added. The result keeps Pirates hot on the heels of league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chiefs remain in search of consistency under Fernando Da Cruz.
