Mamelodi Sundowns are adding fresh young talent to their squad, and the latest name to arrive is midfielder Lazola Maku. The South African champions have signed the Amajita captain after he left Siwelele FC, giving the 19-year-old a chance to grow his career at one of the biggest clubs in the country.
Maku's road to Chloorkop has been anything but ordinary. When his contract with Siwelele came to an end, he travelled to Austria for assessments with several clubs, hoping to build a career abroad. He then returned home to play for Amajita at the COSAFA Under-20 Championship, where he picked up valuable minutes and helped the national team defend its title.
His form at the tournament only added to his reputation. Under his leadership, Amajita beat hosts Mozambique 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy and book a place at the next Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
He had already caught attention at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2025, where South Africa won the title by beating Morocco 1-0 in the final. That tournament showed he could handle high-pressure football and lead a team when it mattered most.
Before leaving Siwelele, Maku made five senior appearances, which gave him his first taste of professional football. Joining Sundowns is a big step in his development, but he will have to fight for his place in a squad packed with experienced players.
Sundowns are known for nurturing young talent and giving them the space to improve both technically and tactically. Still, breaking into the first team at Chloorkop is never easy, and midfield is one of the most competitive areas of the squad.
The club is likely to take a patient approach. Maku will need time to settle into the team's playing style, adapt to the demands of the club and keep improving before he is trusted with bigger responsibilities. Being 19 gives Sundowns the chance to invest in his long-term growth rather than rushing him into regular action.
For Maku, the immediate task is turning his international success into consistent performances for the club. His experience as captain of Amajita could be a real advantage as he adjusts to life in a big-club environment.
The move also fits Sundowns' wider recruitment strategy. Bringing in promising players who can strengthen the squad over time is part of how the Brazilians plan to keep their domestic dominance going while staying competitive across Africa, especially as they prepare for the 2026/27 season.
Attention now turns to how quickly Maku can adapt. His time in Europe exposed him to different styles of football, and his spell with Amajita gave him valuable competitive minutes at a crucial stage of his career. His exact role at Sundowns is yet to be decided, but the chance to train and learn alongside experienced professionals could accelerate his development.
For the Tshwane giants, the priority is making sure their new recruit grows at the right pace. If Maku keeps building on what he showed with Amajita, he could become an important figure in Sundowns' plans for the future.
Do you think Lazola Maku can make it at Sundowns, or will he need a loan spell elsewhere before he earns a regular starting place? Drop your prediction in the comments and tell us if you rate him as the next big South African midfielder.
