Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained his decision to give Monnapule Saleng an opportunity to feature in the club’s Carling Knockout Cup last-16 encounter against Marumo Gallants.
Cardoso indicated that the decision was intended to give the winger an opportunity to reflect on his situation, improve his consistency and demonstrate his ability to train regularly at the required level.
The Portuguese coach suggested that Saleng needed time to assess himself and work on certain areas that required improvement as he continued adapting to his circumstances at the club.
“That's an opportunity we gave to Saleng, for him to go over on his thoughts, understand about himself, show consistency, train systematically in a good level, be aware of some of the things that were important to change,” Cardoso explained.
His comments suggest that the opportunity was not simply about adding another attacking option to the team but also about helping the player establish the consistency expected at Sundowns.
Saleng’s involvement in the cup fixture provided him with a chance to show the technical team what he could contribute as he seeks to strengthen his position within the squad.
The winger’s progress will be closely monitored as Sundowns continue competing on multiple fronts this season.
Cardoso’s remarks also underline the importance of discipline, regular training and self-improvement in earning opportunities under the club’s technical team.
