AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has described his team as underdogs ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Durban Derby against Golden Arrows, despite his side enjoying an impressive run of form.
Zwane acknowledged that AmaZulu would enter the encounter as underdogs, insisting that Golden Arrows should not be underestimated ahead of the local derby.
Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated clash, Zwane made his position clear, saying: “We are playing against Arrows, we are underdogs… yes, we are underdogs.”
His comments have attracted attention, particularly considering AmaZulu’s impressive recent performances. The Durban-based outfit heads into the derby on the back of four consecutive victories, a run that has boosted confidence within the squad and strengthened expectations among supporters.
However, Zwane appears determined to keep his players grounded and avoid unnecessary pressure ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
The Durban Derby is traditionally an important fixture for both clubs, with local pride, bragging rights and valuable league points at stake. Although AmaZulu have been enjoying better momentum in recent matches, Golden Arrows remain a dangerous opponent capable of making life difficult for their neighbours.
Zwane’s decision to label his team underdogs could also be viewed as a tactical attempt to shift expectations and allow his players to approach the contest with a determined mentality.
For AmaZulu, Saturday’s encounter presents another opportunity to extend their winning streak to five matches and demonstrate that their recent success is no coincidence.
Meanwhile, Golden Arrows will be eager to frustrate their neighbours and secure a positive result in a fixture that carries significant importance for supporters of both clubs.
With both teams preparing for the derby, attention will now turn to whether AmaZulu can maintain their impressive form or whether Golden Arrows will spoil their momentum.
Despite Zwane's underdog assessment, AmaZulu will undoubtedly enter the contest with confidence after winning their previous four matches.
