SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL NEWS | 26 OCTOBER 2026

Bafana Bafana attacking midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has continued to make his mark in European football after producing an outstanding performance for Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in their sensational 5-2 comeback victory over Cercle Brugge on Sunday.

The talented South African found the back of the net with a superb header before providing an assist later in the match, helping his team secure an emphatic victory after a challenging start to the encounter.

Mofokeng’s performance is another encouraging development for South African football supporters, who have been following his progress since his move to Belgium from Orlando Pirates.

Mofokeng explains his goal-scoring mentality

Following the match, Mofokeng reflected on his headed goal and explained the importance of confidence, desire and mentality when attempting to find the back of the net.

“It’s just on your mind, if the desire is there and the mentality is there, you’ll always get the goal,” Mofokeng said.

His comments highlight the confidence he is developing as he adapts to the demands of playing football in Europe. Known for his creativity, close control and ability to influence attacking situations, the Bafana international has also demonstrated that he can contribute goals in different ways.

The header was particularly notable because Mofokeng is often recognised for his technical ability and contributions with the ball at his feet. His latest effort demonstrated his willingness to attack crosses and take advantage of opportunities inside the opposition penalty area.

A decisive performance in Belgium

According to match reports, Mofokeng scored Union Saint-Gilloise’s fourth goal in the 80th minute, connecting with a deep cross from Patrice and looping his header beyond the goalkeeper.

He then contributed to the fifth goal by setting up Kevin Rodríguez in the closing stages, completing a productive afternoon for the South African midfielder.

The 5-2 result underlined Union’s attacking strength and ability to recover from difficult situations. Mofokeng’s contribution was especially important as the Belgian club continued its campaign in the domestic league.

The performance also offered another indication of his growing influence in the team, with his ability to score and create chances making him a valuable attacking option.
