Legendary former Orlando Pirates favourite Jomo Sono has spoken highly of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby.

Sono, who remains one of the most respected figures in South African football, has been impressed by Shabalala's qualities and has not held back in expressing his admiration for the young midfielder.

The former Pirates star's praise comes at a particularly interesting time, with Chiefs preparing for one of the biggest fixtures on the domestic football calendar against their bitter rivals, Orlando Pirates.

Shabalala has become an important figure in the Chiefs setup, with his performances attracting attention from supporters and football observers. His technical ability, creativity and confidence on the ball have made him one of the players to watch whenever Amakhosi take to the field.

Sono's comments also carry significance because of his strong historical association with Orlando Pirates. His decision to publicly praise a player representing their fiercest rivals adds an interesting dimension to the build-up to the derby.

For Chiefs, Shabalala will be among the players expected to make an impact when the two Soweto giants meet. The midfielder's ability to influence attacking play could prove important in a fixture where individual moments often make the difference.

The Soweto Derby is traditionally one of the most closely watched matches in South African football, bringing together two clubs with enormous support bases and a long-standing rivalry.

With a respected football figure like Sono publicly recognising Shabalala's talent, the midfielder will enter the derby spotlight with additional attention on his performance.

However, praise from a legend does not guarantee anything on matchday. Shabalala will need to deliver on the pitch if he is to help Chiefs secure a positive result against Pirates.
