Wiliete Coach Bianchi Celebrates Historic Sundowns Elimination After Loftus Versfeld Triumph

It’s Not Every Day’: Wiliete Coach Savours Famous Night Against Mamelodi Sundowns

Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has expressed his pride in his players after the Angolan outfit produced one of the biggest surprises of the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds by eliminating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld.

For the relatively young Angolan club, progressing to the Champions League group stages represents a significant achievement. Eliminating a team with Sundowns’ continental pedigree makes the accomplishment even more special, particularly considering that the decisive encounter took place on South African soil.

The two teams played to a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola, leaving Sundowns with the advantage of playing the return fixture at home. The Brazilians appeared to be on course for qualification when Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring in the 11th minute, giving the home supporters reason to believe that their team would comfortably progress.

However, Wiliete had other plans.

The visitors remained organised and continued to follow their defensive approach despite spending considerable periods without the ball. Their patience eventually paid off when experienced Angolan striker Cristóvão Paciência, popularly known as Mabululu, equalised shortly after half-time.

The goal changed the complexion of the contest because Wiliete now had the crucial away goal. Sundowns needed another goal to avoid elimination, but despite increasing their attacking pressure, they could not find a way through.

The match ended 1-1, leaving the aggregate score level. Under the away-goals rule applicable to this tie, Wiliete progressed to the group stages at the expense of the defending champions.

Speaking after the match, Bianchi praised his players for their discipline and commitment, acknowledging the difficulty of securing such a result against a club of Sundowns’ stature.

He explained that his team expected the South African champions to dominate possession at home and therefore prepared to defend in a low block.

Bianchi was particularly pleased with how his players handled that responsibility, recognising that Sundowns created several opportunities but failed to convert them into the goal they desperately needed.

The Wiliete coach also highlighted the significance of the achievement, saying that it is not every day a team gets to beat Mamelodi Sundowns on their own home turf.

His comments reflect the magnitude of the result for a club that does not enjoy the same continental experience or resources as the South African giants.

For Wiliete, this is more than simply progressing to another round of a competition. The club has secured a place in the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time in its history, giving its players an opportunity to compete against some of Africa’s established football institutions.

The result also demonstrates the importance of tactical organisation in continental football. Sundowns enjoyed greater attacking opportunities, but Wiliete understood that dominating possession was not necessarily going to be required to achieve its objective.

Instead, Bianchi’s players remained disciplined, protected their defensive areas and capitalised on an important opportunity.

For Mamelodi Sundowns supporters, the elimination will be particularly painful. The club had reached the group stages in each of the previous 11 editions, making this an unexpected interruption to an impressive continental record.

The defeat also ends their defence of the African title before the group stages, placing additional attention on the technical team’s preparations and ability to respond to disappointment.

Meanwhile, Wiliete can now look forward to an entirely different challenge. The group stages will expose the Angolan side to stronger opposition and demand the same organisation that helped them eliminate Sundowns.

Bianchi deserves credit for preparing his team for a difficult assignment, but the real test will be maintaining that competitiveness against other continental opponents.

For now, Wiliete have every reason to celebrate. Eliminating the reigning African champions in Pretoria is an achievement that will remain an important moment in the club’s history.

Bianchi’s message was ultimately a tribute to his players, who delivered a disciplined performance and proved that reputations alone do not win football matches.
