South African midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi started for Al Khalidiya as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Al Ittifaq in the Bahraini Premier League, dropping valuable points in the race for the league title.
Maswanganyi, who joined the Bahraini side after his time with Orlando Pirates, was included in the starting lineup as Khalidiya looked to secure all three points on home soil. However, despite scoring twice, the team could not find a winning goal and had to settle for a share of the points.
The result leaves Al Khalidiya in second place in the league standings, two points behind leaders Al Riffa. The narrow gap means the title race remains competitive, but dropped points could prove costly as the campaign progresses.
For Maswanganyi, the match provided another opportunity to gain valuable playing time and contribute to his new club’s ambitions. The South African playmaker has now made eight appearances for Khalidiya, registering two assists during his time with the team.
His involvement in the starting lineup also highlights his growing role as he continues adapting to football in Bahrain. Known for his creativity and ability to operate in attacking areas, Maswanganyi will be hoping to add more assists and goals as Khalidiya push to challenge for the top position.
The 2-2 draw will nevertheless leave the team reflecting on a missed opportunity to close the gap on Al Riffa. With only two points separating the sides, Khalidiya remain firmly in contention, but consistency will be crucial in the coming fixtures.
Maswanganyi and his teammates will now look to return to winning ways and keep the pressure on the league leaders. For the South African midfielder, the immediate priority will be to maintain his place in the starting eleven and help his club turn promising performances into victories.
