Diski Challenge Round-Up: Chiefs Make It Six From Six, Pirates Hit Five, Sundowns Held

On a weekend of contrasting fortunes at the juvenile level, Kaizer Chiefs' reserve team continued their immaculate start to the DStv Diski Challenge season, while Mamelodi Sundowns were left unsatisfied and Orlando Pirates ran rampant.

With their 2-0 triumph over Siwelele FC, Chiefs extended their lead atop the Diski Challenge rankings to five points, making it six wins in a row. Tashiel Rugunanan scored his second goal of the season to put the game away in the first half, and Teboho Mlangeni put the game away in the second half. Astonishingly, considering the first team's problems in the Betway Premiership, Amakhosi is the sole league side with a clean record thanks to the win.

But to stay in touch with the leaders, Orlando Pirates put on their most dominant display of the weekend, scoring five goals against their opponents. A vicious performance by the Buccaneers' youthful attackers highlighted the depth of talent at Mayfair, where the club's junior program is still turning out players who can play in the main squad.

After being held to a draw by Polokwane City, Mamelodi Sundowns fell even further behind Chiefs in the title chase and were deemed the round's biggest losers. Despite having the better of the possession game, the youth-level Brazilians were unable to secure a victory. This leaves them five points behind the leaders and bewildered as the Diski Challenge season takes shape.

The outcomes of the weekend provide an intriguing glimpse into the progress of South African football's junior system. The Chiefs' flawless start is indicative of a disciplined and well-drilled academy system, while the Pirates' goal-scoring explosion gives the impression that the club's development base is nurturing attacking flair. In contrast, Sundowns' slip-up shows that inconsistent play at the reserve level can stymie even the most resource-rich clubs.

With six rounds under their belts, the Chiefs have established an unsustainable tempo; but, the breathing room afforded by their five-point lead is invaluable. Sundowns will be itching to get back on track when the Diski Challenge picks back up, while Pirates are still very much in the hunt. Naturena, where things are looking very good for the future, gets to gloat for the time being.
