Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy continues to make progress in European football after earning his fourth consecutive start in the UEFA Champions League with Azerbaijani club Sabah FK.
The South African youngster has been handed another opportunity to showcase his abilities on the European stage as Sabah FK prepare to face Norwegian side Viking FK. The match is scheduled to take place in Norway at 22:00 South African time.
McCarthy's continued presence in the starting lineup highlights the confidence his coach has in his abilities. Starting four consecutive matches in a major European competition is an important achievement, particularly for a young defender who is still building his reputation outside South Africa.
The former Kaizer Chiefs player has also made a positive impression with his performances in the competition. His statistics from his first three appearances demonstrate his contribution at both ends of the pitch.
McCarthy has played three matches, starting all three and completing 270 minutes of football. This means he has played every minute of those matches, showing how important he has become to his team's defensive structure.
One of the biggest highlights of his Champions League campaign so far has been his goal against German giants Borussia Dortmund. The defender found the back of the net with a powerful header, giving him an opportunity to demonstrate that he can also contribute offensively during important matches.
His passing statistics have also been impressive. McCarthy has recorded a 92 per cent passing accuracy, completing 105 passes. This shows his ability to remain composed in possession and help his team build attacks from the back.
Defensively, the South African has recovered 15 balls, completed nine clearances and registered five tackles. These numbers underline his willingness to work hard, protect his team's defensive area and deal with opposition attacks.
He has received just one yellow card and has yet to receive a red card in the competition.
As Sabah FK prepare for their meeting with Viking FK, McCarthy will be hoping to maintain his impressive form and deliver another solid performance.
His fourth consecutive start represents another important milestone in his developing career. For South African football supporters, his progress in European football is certainly encouraging, especially considering his previous connection with Kaizer Chiefs.
A strong performance in Norway could further strengthen his position in the team and help him continue making his mark on the European stage.
