OFFICIAL: Cardoso And Two Sundowns Stars Receive Major CAF Awards Nominations
Mamelodi Sundowns have received another major recognition on the African football stage after head coach Miguel Cardoso and two of the club's key players earned nominations for the prestigious 2026 CAF Awards.
The latest development represents a significant achievement for the Tshwane giants, who continue to enjoy recognition for their performances in domestic and continental competitions.
Cardoso has been nominated for the CAF Men's Coach of the Year award following an impressive period in charge of the Brazilians. The Portuguese tactician has played an important role in maintaining Sundowns' competitiveness while guiding the club through another demanding campaign.
His nomination comes after Sundowns enjoyed a successful CAF Champions League campaign, eventually securing their second continental title. The achievement further strengthened the club's reputation as one of Africa's leading football institutions.
Meanwhile, Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams has received recognition in the Goalkeeper of the Year category. The Bafana Bafana international has established himself as one of the continent's most respected goalkeepers, thanks to his consistency, leadership and important contributions between the posts.
His performances for both club and country have continued to attract attention, making him a strong representative of South African football at continental level.
Another Sundowns star, Teboho Mokoena, has also been recognised with a nomination for the Interclub Player of the Year award.
The influential midfielder was instrumental in the club's continental success, with his performances in the Champions League highlighting his importance to the team. His spectacular long-range effort in the final was particularly memorable and contributed to Sundowns securing the prestigious trophy.
In addition to the individual nominations, Mamelodi Sundowns have also been shortlisted for the CAF Men's Club of the Year award, further highlighting the club's impressive achievements.
The nominations provide another opportunity for South African football to make its presence felt among the continent's best, with Sundowns continuing to carry the country's hopes at the highest level.
The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 7, where the continent's outstanding players, coaches and clubs will be celebrated.
For Cardoso, Williams and Mokoena, the nominations represent recognition of their contributions to African football, although the ultimate challenge will be turning their respective nominations into continental honours.
