Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has earned continental recognition after being shortlisted for the prestigious 2026 CAF Coach of the Year award, placing him among the leading football managers competing for one of African football's biggest individual honours.

The Portuguese tactician is one of 10 nominees selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in recognition of their achievements and contributions to the game over the past year. His inclusion on the shortlist represents another significant milestone for Sundowns and highlights the club's continued presence among Africa's leading football institutions.

Since taking charge at Chloorkop, Cardoso has carried the responsibility of maintaining Sundowns' dominance in South African football while also pursuing success in continental competitions. The expectations surrounding the Tshwane giants remain exceptionally high, with supporters demanding consistent performances and trophies at home and in Africa.

Cardoso will, however, face strong competition from several respected coaches who have made their mark at club and international levels.

Among the nominees are DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre, Egypt national team manager Hossam Hassan and Morocco head coach Walid Regragui. Senegal's Pape Thiaw has also been recognised, alongside Cape Verde coach Pedro Leitão Brito, popularly known as Bubista.

Other candidates include Lamine N'Diaye of USM Alger, Moatamed Gamal of Zamalek, Alexandre Santos of AS FAR Rabat and Morocco Under-20 coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

The complete shortlist features 10 coaches representing different footballing nations and clubs across the continent.

For Cardoso, winning the award would be a major personal achievement and further strengthen his reputation beyond South African football. His nomination also represents positive recognition for the Premier Soccer League, with Sundowns continuing to contribute to the country's standing in African football.

Sundowns supporters will now be hoping their coach can turn the nomination into an award when CAF announces the eventual winner.
