Disaster Averted: Sundowns Ladies Escaped Nightmare Against Lekié Filles

Sundowns Ladies Snatch Late Winner to Secure First CAF Champions League Victory

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have finally registered their first victory at the 2026 CAF Women's Champions League after securing an important 2-1 win over Cameroonian outfit Lekié Football Filles on Wednesday afternoon.

The South African champions produced a determined performance at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt, with a dramatic late goal proving decisive in a crucial Group A encounter.

The victory represents a significant boost for the Brazilians, who were desperate to collect maximum points after beginning their continental campaign with a disappointing goalless draw against Egyptian representatives FC Masar.

Wednesday's encounter presented another important test for the Tshwane-based outfit, particularly against a Lekié side determined to make an impression in their maiden appearance at the prestigious continental competition.

Both teams understood the importance of collecting three points, knowing that the outcome could have a major influence on their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

However, Sundowns demonstrated their determination to get their campaign back on track, eventually finding the breakthrough needed to secure victory.

The Brazilians showed character throughout the contest, refusing to surrender despite the challenges presented by their Cameroonian opponents.

The decisive moment arrived in the 87th minute when Sundowns found the winning goal to complete a dramatic 2-1 victory.

The late strike sparked celebrations for the South African representatives, who had worked hard to secure their first three points of the tournament.

More importantly, the result takes Sundowns Ladies to the top of Group A with four points from their opening two matches.

Their improved position puts them in a stronger position as they continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages.

The result will also provide a welcome confidence boost for head coach Godfrey Sapula and his technical team ahead of their remaining group-stage assignment.

Sundowns are among the favourites for the competition, having previously lifted the CAF Women's Champions League trophy in 2021 and 2023.

The South African giants are now determined to reclaim their continental crown after missing the previous edition.

Their next challenge will be against Moroccan side FUS Rabat on November 7, in what promises to be another important Group A encounter.

With qualification for the semi-finals still at stake, Sundowns will know that another positive performance could take them closer to achieving their continental ambitions.

For now, the Brazilians have delivered an important statement by securing their first victory in Egypt.
