Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has explained one of the challenges facing Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro, admitting that the forward is still struggling to understand the team's playing style.
Da Cruz made the comments while discussing Ighodaro's current situation at the club. According to the Chiefs coach, the striker has not yet fully understood how the technical team wants the team to play, suggesting that he still needs time to adapt to the system.
"Ighodaro, at the moment, has a lack of understanding of our game model," Da Cruz said.
The statement has attracted attention among Kaizer Chiefs supporters, particularly those who have been waiting to see the Nigerian forward make a bigger impact in the team's attacking department.
Ighodaro arrived with expectations of strengthening the club's forward line, but adapting to a new team and its tactical demands can take time. Every coach has a particular approach to football, and players are expected to understand their responsibilities before they can perform effectively within the system.
For a striker, this involves more than simply scoring goals. Understanding when to press, how to move without the ball, when to drop deeper and how to connect with teammates are all important parts of a team's attacking structure.
Da Cruz's assessment suggests that the coaching staff wants Ighodaro to improve his understanding of these responsibilities before he can become a more effective option in the team.
However, the coach's comments do not necessarily mean that the Nigerian forward has been written off. Instead, they highlight an area where he needs to make progress if he wants to earn more opportunities and become an important player for the Soweto giants.
Chiefs have been working to improve their attacking performances, and having a striker who understands the team's movements and tactical instructions could make a significant difference.
Supporters will now be interested to see how Ighodaro responds to the coach's assessment. The Nigerian has the opportunity to demonstrate his understanding through his performances whenever he is given playing time.
For Da Cruz, the priority will be helping the striker adapt to the team's approach and become more effective within the system.
