Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has warned his teammates that the CAF Champions League will demand a higher level of performance as the Buccaneers prepare for their return to the group stages of Africa's premier club competition.
Pirates have been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzanian giants Simba SC, Moroccan side RS Berkane and Cameroonian outfit Colombe Sportive. The draw presents a difficult challenge for the Soweto club, which is determined to make a strong impression on the continent.
Reacting to the group, Sibisi acknowledged that the competition offers a different test compared to domestic football. He believes the quality of the opposition will provide an opportunity for Pirates to measure their progress against some of Africa's established teams.
“I think the Champions League is a different ball game. I think it’s a level higher and I think it’s going to be a good test to see where we are as a team,” Sibisi said.
The Pirates captain also reflected on the club's recent disappointments in continental competitions. He explained that the players have examined areas where they previously struggled and are working to avoid repeating those mistakes.
“So in the past two seasons we fell short, we’ve been able to try to rectify where we thought we fell short, so for us it’s just looking forward to playing the competition and for our boys to get the much-needed experience,” he added.
The Buccaneers secured their group-stage place after overcoming La Cure Waves SC and African Stars FC in the qualifying rounds. However, Sibisi understands that the challenges ahead will be considerably tougher.
Pirates will begin their group campaign with an away encounter against Simba SC in Dar es Salaam on November 28. The fixture will offer an early indication of how prepared the South African side is for the demands of the competition.
The club last won the CAF Champions League in 1995 and will be hoping to make another serious attempt at continental success.
