Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior has dismissed social media reports linking the club with a possible move for former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
The rumours emerged after Mngqithi reportedly parted ways with Tanzanian club Young Africans last weekend, ending his spell just four months after taking charge.
His availability has fuelled speculation about a potential return to the Premier Soccer League, particularly as Chiefs continue to face scrutiny over their performances under head coach Fernando Da Cruz.
An X user, Innocent wakwaMkhize, claimed that Chiefs had begun discussions with Mngqithi behind the scenes. The post also suggested that the experienced coach was unhappy with the club’s current technical team.
However, Motaung Junior responded directly to the claims, describing them as “Complete lies”.
His statement represents a clear denial of the reported negotiations, although pressure remains on Da Cruz to improve the team’s results.
Chiefs were recently eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing to Red Arrows on penalties, adding to concerns among supporters about the club’s progress this season.
Attention now turns to the Carling Knockout Cup and the upcoming Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates. Both fixtures could prove important for Da Cruz as he attempts to strengthen his position.
Despite Motaung Junior’s public backing, Chiefs will be expected to deliver improved performances in the coming matches.
