Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou was furious with his players, even though they beat Milford FC 3-0 at home on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup.
The defending champions scored all three goals in the first half, but Ouaddou said the only positive from the match was the result and the clean sheet. He felt his team lacked control and made too many rushed decisions.
Speaking to SuperSport TV, the Moroccan coach said some of his players were selfish in front of goal. He explained that instead of passing to a teammate who was in a better position to score, they chose to shoot, and that cost the team more goals.
Ouaddou said he would only keep the victory from the match because he was not happy with how the team played. He warned that if Pirates continue like this, they will not win any silverware this season. He made it clear that if the club wants to dream bigger, which means winning the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League, the players must show more seriousness.
The coach also said it was unacceptable that Milford had more possession than Pirates at times in their own backyard. He said he would check the statistics, but a visiting team should never have more of the ball than his side at home. He accepted that his players played three days earlier and may have lacked freshness, but pointed out that he had rotated the team.
Ouaddou said his players need to wake up, repeating that he is not there to nurse people. He reminded them that when they sign a contract with a big club like Pirates, they must perform at another level, especially when the club has ambitions on the continent.
