Rulani Mokwena's Pyramids Close In on Sundowns as Africa's Number One Club
Mamelodi Sundowns have retained their position as Africa's highest-ranked football club despite their shock elimination from the CAF Champions League, but former coach Rulani Mokwena's Pyramids FC are closing in on the South African giants.
According to the latest FootballDatabase African club rankings, Sundowns occupy first place with 1,694 points, while Pyramids sit second with 1,675 points. The 19-point difference highlights the growing competition for continental supremacy as Mokwena continues to build his reputation in Egyptian football.
Sundowns' position at the summit reflects their consistent performances and achievements over recent seasons. However, their unexpected Champions League exit has raised questions about their ability to maintain their dominance, particularly with two ambitious Egyptian clubs putting pressure on them.
The Brazilians suffered a disappointing elimination against Angola's Wiliete SC in the second preliminary round of the competition. After playing to a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola, Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw in the return fixture in Pretoria. Wiliete advanced on the away-goals rule, ending the South African side's hopes of defending their continental crown.
The setback was a significant disappointment for a club accustomed to competing among Africa's elite.
Meanwhile, Mokwena's Pyramids have enjoyed a positive start to their continental campaign. The Egyptian champions secured qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage after defeating El Merriekh Bentiu 4-0 in the second leg, completing a convincing 5-0 aggregate victory.
Their progress has strengthened expectations that Pyramids could challenge for greater continental success under the former Sundowns coach.
Egyptian giants Al Ahly also remain in contention, occupying third place with 1,651 points.
With Pyramids only 19 points behind Sundowns, the battle for Africa's number-one club ranking could intensify in the coming months. Sundowns will be eager to recover from their continental disappointment, while Mokwena's side will look to capitalise on their momentum and close the gap further.
