Orlando Pirates Face Tough CAF Champions League Draw as CAF Rankings Reveal Major Challenge
Orlando Pirates face a challenging road ahead in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after their position in the continental club rankings placed them in Pot 3 for Wednesday’s group-stage draw in Cairo, Egypt.
The Buccaneers secured their place among Africa’s 16 remaining title contenders after delivering an impressive performance against Namibia’s African Stars, winning 5-0 on aggregate to book their ticket to the next stage.
However, while their qualification has boosted South African hopes, their ranking suggests that the Soweto giants could face some difficult opponents as they prepare for the group stages.
Pirates Placed in Pot 3
According to the confirmed group-stage draw pots, Pirates have been placed in Pot 3 alongside Algeria’s MC Alger, Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou and Guinea’s Horoya AC.
The positioning means the Buccaneers could be drawn against some of the continent’s most established clubs, including teams that have enjoyed considerable success in African football.
Pot 1 features ES Tunis, Zamalek SC, RS Berkane and Pyramids FC, while Pot 2 includes Al Hilal, Simba SC, Young Africans and Petro de Luanda.
Pot 4 comprises Club Africain, Wiliete SC, Colombe Sportive and MAS de Fès.
With four teams allocated to each pot, Pirates will be drawn into one of four groups, where they must finish among the top two to advance to the quarter-finals.
Continental Giants Await
The composition of the pots presents a significant test for Pirates, particularly given the experience and quality of several potential opponents.
Egyptian giants Zamalek and Pyramids boast strong continental ambitions, while Tunisia’s ES Tunis and Morocco’s RS Berkane will also be determined to challenge for the prestigious trophy.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Simba and Young Africans have developed into formidable competitors, making Pot 2 another potential source of difficult opposition.
Pirates will therefore need to approach the group stages with consistency, tactical discipline and the mentality required to compete against Africa’s best.
An Opportunity to Make a Statement
Despite the difficult possibilities, Pirates have every reason to approach the draw with confidence following their convincing qualification.
Their immediate objective will be to navigate the group stages successfully and establish themselves as genuine contenders for continental honours.
The Buccaneers also have an opportunity to strengthen their standing in African football through strong performances against higher-ranked opposition.
The group-stage draw is scheduled for Wednesday, 28 October 2026, in Cairo, with the Champions League ceremony set to begin at 15:00 local time.
For Pirates, the message is clear: their ranking may present a difficult challenge, but their performances on the pitch will ultimately determine how far they can go.
South African supporters will now wait to discover whether the Buccaneers receive a favourable draw or face an early examination against some of Africa’s biggest football names.
