Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed the inspiration behind his demanding coaching philosophy, using a story about former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry to explain why he constantly pushes his players to achieve more.
The Moroccan coach made the remarks following Pirates’ impressive 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, where his passionate touchline reactions attracted attention.
Ouaddou explained that his intense approach comes from a desire to see his team reach the highest possible standards, particularly at a club with the expectations and history of Orlando Pirates.
Having spent 17 years as a professional footballer before becoming a coach, Ouaddou said he understands the demands of the game and believes excellence should always be the target.
To illustrate his philosophy, he shared a story from Henry’s childhood. The former Arsenal striker reportedly scored four or five goals during a youth match in Paris, only to return home and discover that his father was still not satisfied.
Instead of celebrating his performance, Henry’s father encouraged him to score even more goals.
Ouaddou said he wants to adopt a similar mentality with his players, encouraging them to improve continuously rather than becoming comfortable with their achievements.
The Pirates coach acknowledged that his emotional approach affects players differently. While some are motivated by his passion, others may initially struggle to handle the pressure.
He believes managing emotions is an important part of football at the highest level.
Pirates’ performances suggest the approach is producing positive results, with the team remaining unbeaten in the league and their Soweto Derby victory providing another important boost.
Ouaddou insists his passion is driven by one objective: helping Orlando Pirates become better and achieve greater success.
