Mamelodi Sundowns winger Tashreeq Matthews has insisted that revenge is not motivating the team as they prepare to face Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 on Tuesday.
The upcoming encounter brings back painful memories for the Tshwane giants, who were eliminated by Gallants at the same stage of last season’s competition. The two teams played to a goalless draw before Bahlabane Ba Ntwa secured a dramatic 7-6 victory in the penalty shootout.
Sundowns will now be determined to avoid another disappointing result as they pursue silverware following their recent CAF Champions League group-stage elimination.
The Brazilians last lifted the Carling Knockout trophy in 2019 and will be eager to strengthen their chances of ending their wait for another triumph in the competition.
However, Matthews has played down suggestions that the encounter is about settling old scores, stressing that Sundowns approach every match with the same objective: winning.
“I don’t think it’s revenge. We just have to go there. Whichever team we play against, we have to win,” Matthews said through the club’s media department.
He added that the team’s focus is firmly on securing victory against Gallants.
The match will take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will host TS Galaxy, while Orlando Pirates welcome Milford FC in other Carling Knockout fixtures.
