“Lost to a Classy Team,” Says African Stars Coach After 4-0 Defeat

African Stars coach Gerald Guther admitted his side fell short against a superior opponent after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates on Friday night.

The Namibian champions went down at the Orlando Amstel Arena in the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie. The result left them on the wrong end of a 5-0 aggregate score after Pirates had won the first leg 1-0.

Guther was honest about the performance. “Lost the game against a classy team, not the result we obviously wanted,” he said. “I just feel we didn’t allow ourselves to get into the game today from the headstart.”

The coach explained that his players lacked confidence early on. He believed more belief would have helped them keep the ball better and settle into the match. Instead, Pirates punished them with early goals and never looked back.

Thapelo Mokobodi scored first for the Buccaneers, followed by two from Evidence Makgopa and one from young substitute Mpho Padime. The home side controlled the game from start to finish in front of their supporters.

African Stars had entered the match knowing they needed a strong performance to overturn the deficit. Their domestic league had not yet started, so the team arrived short of competitive match fitness. Guther felt this played a part, but he refused to make excuses.

He made it clear his players were not overconfident. Rather, they struggled to find their rhythm against a well-organised and sharp Pirates side. The early goals left them with too much to do.

The loss ends African Stars’ run in this year’s Champions League. For Orlando Pirates, the victory means a return to the group stages of Africa’s top club competition.

Guther now turns his attention to preparing the team for the Namibian season. The experience against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs will serve as a learning curve for the young squad and their relatively new coach.

Pirates showed why they remain a force on the continent. African Stars, for their part, can hold their heads high for reaching this stage but must improve if they hope to go further next time.
