Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has offered insight into how the squad has adapted to head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s demanding approach, explaining that the Moroccan tactician’s high expectations are intended to push the players towards greater levels of excellence.
Ouaddou has earned attention for his uncompromising demands since taking charge of the Buccaneers. Despite the team producing impressive results, the coach has repeatedly challenged his players to improve, particularly in their attacking play and ability to convert scoring opportunities.
His approach came under the spotlight following Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup. Although the Buccaneers secured qualification for the quarter-finals, Ouaddou expressed dissatisfaction with their performance, pointing out that they had created 24 chances but scored only three goals.
The coach also criticised selfishness in the final third, insisting that players must prioritise the team's objectives rather than individual ambitions.
However, Sibisi has moved to defend his manager, saying the coach’s comments should not be interpreted as frustration with the players. According to the Pirates captain, Ouaddou simply expects more because of the standards associated with a club of Pirates’ stature.
“I think the coach has been misinterpreted, if I can say, because he demands excellence. Good is not enough. And for a club like Pirates, excellence always has to prevail,” Sibisi explained.
He added that the players have accepted the criticism positively, with no signs of resentment within the dressing room. Sibisi admitted that the squad understood they could have scored more goals against Milford and recognised the need to improve.
The captain also explained that Ouaddou’s emphasis on scoring is connected to the freedom players enjoy during matches. With a relatively young squad, some players naturally want to express their individual skills and entertain supporters. However, the coach wants them to fulfil their responsibilities and secure the result before focusing on showmanship.
Sibisi said the team is working to find a balance between tactical discipline, attacking efficiency and individual creativity.
The defender’s comments offer an indication of how the Pirates dressing room has responded to Ouaddou’s demanding methods as the club continues pursuing domestic and continental success.
