Bafana Bafana defender Ime Okon is going through a difficult period at his European club, Hannover 96, after once again being left on the bench during their latest German league encounter.
Hannover secured a 2-1 victory over Dynamo Dresden, ending a disappointing run of four consecutive matches without a win. However, the result offered little encouragement for the South African international, who was not given an opportunity to feature.
Okon's situation is becoming increasingly concerning, as he has now gone five consecutive matches without making an appearance for the German club. His lack of playing time has raised questions about his position in the team's plans under head coach Sandro Wagner.
What makes the situation more difficult is that the defender has also struggled to get opportunities in cup competitions. Even during Hannover's recent German DFB-Pokal match, Okon remained unused while 19-year-old Malawian midfielder Mwisho Mhango was handed his debut.
For a young footballer trying to establish himself in European football, regular playing time is extremely important. Being consistently overlooked can make it difficult to maintain match fitness, confidence and the rhythm needed to perform at the highest level.
Okon's situation is also something that Bafana Bafana supporters will be monitoring closely. The defender is regarded as one of the South African players with experience in European football, and his development remains important for the national team.
Interestingly, his last competitive appearance came while representing South Africa against Egypt in an international friendly last month. Since returning to Germany, he has been unable to secure minutes at club level.
This situation could become a concern if it continues, especially with the demands of international football requiring players to remain active and competitive at their respective clubs.
Hannover's recent victory may have provided some relief for the team, but Okon will be disappointed that he could not contribute on the pitch.
The defender will now have to continue working hard in training and convince the technical team that he deserves another opportunity.
For now, his immediate challenge is to break into the starting team or at least earn opportunities as a substitute. Bafana Bafana supporters will be hoping that the former SuperSport United player can turn things around and get his European career back on track.
