“I Begged Him To Come Back” Kwanele Kopo Reveals The Real Reason Why Ronwen Almost Quit Football

Ronwen Williams Almost Quit Football After His Brother’s Death — Kwanele Kopo Reveals The Emotional Words That Changed Everything

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams came frighteningly close to walking away from football after the devastating death of his older brother, Marvin, but an emotional intervention from former coach Kwanele Kopo helped change the course of his career.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper has since become one of South Africa’s most respected footballers, leading the national team and earning international recognition for his performances. Yet, behind his achievements lies a painful personal story that nearly brought his football journey to an end before it had truly begun.

Kopo recently revisited the difficult period during an appearance on the Arena Sports Show, explaining how he tried to convince the young goalkeeper to return to the game after grief left him unwilling to continue.

According to Kopo, the heartbreaking news arrived while the SuperSport United youth team was travelling to Cape Town for the Bayhill Under-19 tournament.

“We were flying to the Bayhill Tournament in Cape Town and I got a phone call that his brother passed away,” Kopo recalled.

Williams immediately returned home to Gqeberha to be with his family. The loss deeply affected the young footballer, who shared a close relationship with his older brother.

Kopo explained that the club gave Williams time away from football to grieve, hoping he would eventually return when he was ready.

“We flew him immediately to Gqeberha and gave him a month off, but he didn’t come back,” the coach said.

What followed was a difficult period for everyone who believed in Williams’ potential. The young goalkeeper was struggling with a loss that went far beyond football, and returning to training was not something he could easily bring himself to do.

Rather than giving up on the talented youngster, Kopo continued reaching out to him. He also spoke to Williams’ mother, Hazel, as he searched for a way to encourage him to reconsider his decision.

“I phoned him, begged him to come back, and I told him you are destined to play for Bafana Bafana, and I also spoke to his mother,” Kopo revealed.

The coach eventually found words that connected Williams’ love for football with the memory of the brother he had lost.

“I think what convinced him to come back was when I told him he must come back to honour his brother because he would never have wanted to see him stop playing football.”

The message helped Williams reconsider his future. He eventually returned to SuperSport United, resumed his development and worked his way towards the senior team.

Williams’ subsequent career has been remarkable. He established himself as a leading goalkeeper in South African football, joined Mamelodi Sundowns and became captain of Bafana Bafana.

His performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in early 2024, particularly his four penalty saves against Cape Verde in the quarter-final shoot-out, brought him widespread recognition.
