Golden Arrows head coach Mandla Ncikazi has identified a major weakness in his team that could make their upcoming encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns particularly challenging.
The experienced tactician has expressed serious concerns about his team's attacking performances, admitting that a lack of creativity and goals in the final third remains one of the biggest problems he needs to address since returning to the KwaZulu-Natal-based club.
Golden Arrows are preparing for a difficult Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday evening. The match presents another important opportunity for Ncikazi to assess his squad and demonstrate the progress he hopes to achieve during his second spell at the club.
However, the coach knows that improving his team's attacking output will require immediate attention.
Speaking about his concerns following their recent 1-0 defeat against AmaZulu, Ncikazi admitted that Golden Arrows have struggled to create enough dangerous opportunities in the opposition's half.
"But I'm just concerned about us in the attacking third. I'm concerned about us being so less creative in the opponents’ half, scoring so much less goals," Ncikazi explained.
His comments highlight the challenge facing the coach as he attempts to rebuild confidence and improve the team's performances.
Golden Arrows previously enjoyed a convincing 4-0 victory over Chippa United in the Carling Knockout last 16, giving supporters reasons to believe that the team could become competitive under their returning coach.
However, their subsequent defeat against AmaZulu exposed some of the attacking problems that Ncikazi wants to correct.
The coach also acknowledged that the current fixture schedule makes it difficult to spend enough time working on specific tactical improvements.
According to Ncikazi, coaching responsibilities require him to find solutions even when matches arrive within a short period.
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns will enter the encounter with confidence following their impressive 4-1 victory over Durban City in the Betway Premiership.
Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has also warned that his teammates must take their opportunities against Golden Arrows, believing that scoring early could make a significant difference.
For Ncikazi, Tuesday's encounter represents another opportunity to test his players against one of South Africa's strongest sides.
Golden Arrows will need greater creativity, better decision-making and improved finishing if they hope to overcome Sundowns and keep their Carling Knockout ambitions alive.
The biggest question is whether Ncikazi can find an immediate solution to the attacking problems troubling his team.
