Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has reportedly selected 38 players in a provisional squad as South Africa prepares for its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 qualifying matches against Kenya in November.
The preliminary selection gives Mosimane an opportunity to assess a range of players before naming the final squad for the upcoming fixtures. The list is not yet final, and those included will still need to compete for places in the team.
Among the established names reportedly considered are captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane and forward Iqraam Rayners.
Other players reportedly included are Lyle Foster, Relebohile Mofokeng, Teboho Mokoena, Thapelo Morena, Cassius Mailula and Luther Singh.
The provisional selection features a combination of experienced internationals and younger players, giving the coach several options as he assesses the squad ahead of the qualifiers.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are among the clubs represented on the reported list. Players based abroad have also reportedly been considered, allowing Mosimane to assess talent competing in different leagues.
These include Sphephelo Sithole of Portugal’s Tondela, Ime Okon of Germany’s Hannover 96, Luke Le Roux of Belgium’s Cercle Brugge and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who plays for Chicago Fire in the United States.
Brooklyn Poggenpoel of Durban City, Lebone Seema of Orlando Pirates and Puso Dithejane of Chicago Fire are also reportedly among those being considered.
Mosimane’s return to the Bafana Bafana coaching role was reportedly announced in September 2026 as South Africa prepared for the continental qualifying campaign. He previously coached the national team and achieved significant success at club level, including winning the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.
The November fixtures against Kenya will form part of South Africa’s preparations for the AFCON 2027 qualification campaign. Kenya will co-host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania.
