Cardoso Sends Strong Message to Sundowns Fans Over New Signing Lazola Maku
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has urged fans to exercise patience with new signing Lazola Maku, insisting that the highly rated youngster must be given enough time to settle into life at Chloorkop before expectations rise over his involvement in the first team.
The 19-year-old midfielder officially joined the Betway Premiership champions on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, after leaving Siwelele following the expiry of his contract. Speaking about Maku’s arrival, Cardoso made it clear that the club recognises the youngster’s ability but believes his development should not be rushed. The Portuguese tactician emphasised that adapting to Sundowns’ playing philosophy and understanding the coaching staff’s expectations will be crucial to the midfielder’s progress.
“Let the boy have the time to settle down and feel comfortable amongst us, to understand what we want from him,” Cardoso said.
The Sundowns coach acknowledged that breaking into the starting line-up will not be easy, particularly because of the quality and depth already available in midfield. He stressed that Maku will have to demonstrate his worth through hard work, consistency and performances whenever opportunities arise.
Cardoso also pointed to the challenges other players have experienced when joining the Tshwane giants, explaining that even talented footballers need time to adapt to the demands of the club.
His message serves as a reminder that Maku’s signing should be viewed as a long-term investment rather than an immediate guarantee of regular playing time.
Despite the warning, Sundowns have shown confidence in the midfielder’s potential by securing his services on a long-term deal. Maku arrives with an impressive youth international background, having been part of South Africa’s Under-20 team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025. He also captained the national Under-20 side to victory in the 2026 COSAFA Cup.
Before completing his move to Sundowns, the youngster explored opportunities abroad, including trials with clubs in Austria. His eventual arrival at Chloorkop gives him an opportunity to continue his development while competing alongside some of the country's most established players.
However, the challenge ahead remains significant. Sundowns demand high standards in training and competition, meaning Maku must prove that he can meet Cardoso’s tactical and technical expectations.
For the young midfielder, patience, discipline and determination will be essential as he begins this new chapter.
Cardoso’s comments underline Sundowns’ approach: Maku has the talent to succeed, but his progress will depend on how quickly he adapts and earns his place. The club is prepared to give him time, but the responsibility to turn his potential into consistent first-team performances ultimately rests with him.
