Orlando Pirates Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Explains Why Sebastian Pedersen Is Not Yet a Regular Starter

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why new striker Sebastian Pedersen has not yet established himself as a regular starter, insisting that the Norwegian forward is getting closer to earning a place in the starting lineup.

Ouaddou’s comments come amid growing discussion among Pirates supporters about Pedersen’s limited involvement since joining the Buccaneers. Some fans have questioned why the striker has not received more opportunities to demonstrate his abilities, particularly as the club continues to assess its attacking options.

However, the Pirates coach has indicated that Pedersen’s integration into the team requires patience, with adaptation to South African football conditions forming part of the process.

According to Ouaddou, the 27-year-old is “not far” from becoming a starter, suggesting that the striker remains in contention for a more prominent role.

The coach was nevertheless cautious about introducing Pedersen too quickly before he had fully adapted to his new environment. One of the factors highlighted was altitude, which can influence physical performance and recovery for players who are not accustomed to playing at higher elevations.

South Africa’s football calendar includes matches at venues with different altitude conditions, requiring visiting and newly arrived players to adjust to changes that may affect their endurance and match preparation.

For Pedersen, adapting to these demands is part of settling into a new league, learning the team's tactical approach and building the fitness required to compete consistently.

Ouaddou’s explanation suggests that the striker’s limited opportunities should not automatically be interpreted as a lack of confidence in his ability. Instead, the coaching staff appears focused on ensuring he is ready before giving him a greater responsibility on the pitch.

The comments may offer some reassurance to supporters eager to see more of the Norwegian forward in action.

Whether Pedersen will be included in the starting lineup in upcoming matches remains to be seen. His progress, adaptation and performances in training are likely to influence how quickly he earns that opportunity.

For now, Ouaddou has made it clear that Pedersen is approaching the next step, but the coach does not want to rush the process at Orlando Pirates.
