Mamelodi Sundowns have secured their place in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals after recording a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday.
A second-half goal from striker Iqraam Rayners proved decisive, keeping the Brazilians' domestic cup ambitions alive.
Sundowns dominated large periods of the encounter, creating several promising opportunities. However, Golden Arrows, coached by Mandla Ncikazi, showed impressive defensive discipline and made life difficult for Miguel Cardoso's men.
Despite their attacking pressure, Sundowns struggled to find a breakthrough until the 68th minute, when Rayners finally put the hosts ahead.
The goal proved enough to separate the two sides, as Golden Arrows failed to produce a clear response against a well-organised Sundowns defence and goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.
Rayners nearly doubled the advantage during stoppage time. In the 90+1st minute, the forward found himself in a promising position but sent his effort narrowly wide of the post.
The victory continues Sundowns' impressive run in the competition after they defeated Marumo Gallants 1-0 in the previous round.
Meanwhile, Golden Arrows bow out despite a determined performance, having reached the quarter-finals with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Chippa United.
The result also provides Sundowns with a confidence boost ahead of their upcoming CAF Super Cup encounter against USM Alger on Sunday.
Full-time: Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 Golden Arrows.
Goal: Iqraam Rayners (68').
Sundowns are now one step closer to lifting another domestic trophy as they prepare for the semi-finals.
