Villarreal aim to extend their LaLiga winning run. They welcome Espanyol, while the hosts look to build on an encouraging spell of domestic form. The Yellow Submarine have collected 12 points from their opening 10 league matches, recording three wins, three draws and four defeats to sit 10th in the table.

Although their recent UEFA Champions League trip ended in a narrow 4-3 defeat to Liverpool, Villarreal have responded positively, securing a 2-1 league victory over Valencia before thrashing Manacor 5-0 in the Copa del Rey. Marcelino’s side will also take confidence from their impressive recent record against Espanyol, having won each of their last seven meetings with the Catalan club.

Espanyol, meanwhile, arrive amid a difficult period both on and off the pitch. Their disappointing 4-3 Copa del Rey defeat to fourth-tier side Sestao on Tuesday proved to be the final match of Manolo Gonzalez’s tenure, leaving the club searching for a new head coach. Their league campaign has also been troubling, with just eight points from 10 matches placing them 18th in the standings.

The visitors have suffered five defeats in their last six matches across all competitions, with their most recent victory coming against Osasuna on September 12. With uncertainty surrounding the managerial situation and confidence likely to be affected by their recent results, Espanyol face a challenging test. All against the Villarreal side that will be eager to maintain its momentum.
