PSV's Champions League hopes take a hit after 2-1 home loss to Club Brugge

PSV suffered a painful loss at home against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. The Eindhovenaren lost 2-1 at the Philips Stadium after a winning goal from former Ajax winger Carlos Forbs.

The defeat has made PSV’s task of advancing to the play-off round significantly more difficult. The Eredivisie champions face two Madrid sides in the next two games, traveling to Real Madrid before hosting Atletico. They then face Norwegian side Viking before closing their campaign against VFB Stuttgart. They are currently in the last position of the playoff round teams.

Peter Bosz kept Ricardo Pepi on the bench. The striker just returned from injury against Willem II on Saturday, but remained on the bench for this game, with Peter Bosz sticking with Sven Mijnans as the 10 and Guus Til in the striker position. Bosz made one more change to the side that beat Willem II 7-0, with Yarek Gasierowski dropping to the bench for Filip Kostic.

PSV’s fluid positional game with the false nine was apparent in the seventh minute when right back Sergino Dest found himself in the striker position. Dest was found with a terrific pass from Ivan Perisic, but he failed to convert the one-on-one, with Yann Sommer saving the effort.

The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute. A cross from Joaquin Seys found Nicolo Tresoldi in the box, and the striker headed home to score his fifth goal in the Champions League this season.

Dest came close again in the 35th minute. This time the U.S. international did come from the right back position, dribbling into the box before his low drive was palmed out for a corner by Sommer.

PSV keeper Matej Kovar was next up to make a vital save. Kostic lost sight of the ball, giving former Ajax winger Carlos Forbs the chance to run in on goal. His attempt to place the ball through the legs of the keeper was thwarted.

Brugge struck the upright shortly after the break. Felix Lemarechal, who came on after 35 minutes in the first half, ran forward into space before his shot was deflected, ending up on the top of the crossbar.

The same French winger was responsible for wasting a huge opportunity in the 51st minute. Forbs found space on the wing, an issue that would prove costly for PSV, and played a pass to Lemarechal, but bafflingly he opted to try to pass rather than shoot the ball towards goal despite being in a dangerous position; this led to the end of the attack.

PSV equalized three minutes later. A great back heel from Sven Mijnans played in Lutsharel Geertruida, who burst into the box before his low cross eventually fell to Kodai Sano, whose effort deflected into the goal via a Bruges defender and the inside of the post.

The home side pushed on and almost took the lead in the 63rd minute. A corner from Perisic was met by Ruben van Bommel, and it was about to go in if not for Seys, who cleared it off the goal line.

Then came the sucker punch for Bosz’s side. It was yet another counterattack from Forbs. The Portuguese winger found tons of space and made no mistake this time, placing the ball into the far corner.

Brugge have been impressive in the competition this season and have climbed to ninth place with the win, only outside the top eight, which guarantees a bye past the play-off round, on goal difference.

PSV will have to focus on their away game against SC Cambuur on Sunday before a two-week international break.
