Manchester United’s hierarchy has reportedly agreed to grant under-fire head coach Michael Carrick a two-match reprieve, despite mounting pressure following a disastrous run of results.
The decision comes after the Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, a loss that extended their winless streak to nine matches across all competitions.
The afternoon at Stamford Bridge fell apart in the second half when Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock, before Lisandro Martinez received his marching orders and Cole Palmer sealed the points from the penalty spot.
The club’s leadership previously held crisis talks regarding Carrick’s position after a humiliating 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.
While many expected an immediate dismissal, the board ultimately chose to afford the former midfielder more time.
They maintained that stance for the trip to London, but the latest setback leaves United hovering dangerously close to the Premier League relegation zone.
According to reports from The Athletic, Manchester United chiefs have now reached an agreement to keep Carrick in his post for two potentially decisive fixtures.
He will take charge of the Champions League clash against Roma and the subsequent Premier League encounter with Aston Villa.
The board will then reassess the situation during the November international break.
Carrick faced questions about his future after the Chelsea defeat but sidestepped speculation, insisting his sole focus remains on the next game.
When asked by TNT Sports if he expected to remain in charge, he simply replied: “Yes.”
Speaking after the match, Carrick emphasized the need for immediate improvement.
“Got to keep moving forward and winning games, simple as that,” he stated.
“There’s no words that I’m going to explain to you now that makes it any different… You can move up the league quite quickly if you win football matches.”
Manchester United now face a critical week as they determine whether Carrick can turn the tide before the international hiatus.
