FORMER Kaizer Chiefs striker, Shaun Bartlett backs goals galore as Orlando Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby.

Bartlett expects fireworks when Amakhosi take on their bitter rivals Pirates in the much-anticipated Soweto Derby on Saturday, 31 October.

With the famous football rivalry once again taking centre stage, Bartlett believes the team that brings the most hunger, energy and desire will walk away with bragging rights.

Pirates will enjoy home team status at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

With the stadium expected to be packed with passionate supporters, Bartlett said the occasion is about much more than tactics.

“The Soweto Derby is always special. It is very seldom that you get a sold-out crowd at FNB Stadium. Pirates are the team in form and they won the league title last season, but I always say this game is all about emotion.

“The players who show the most desire and energy will end up winning that game. Tactics sometimes go out of the window although they still play a part in getting the result,” he said.

Bartlett believes the opening stages could reveal which side is better prepared to handle the pressure.

“Normally, the first 15 to 20 minutes will give you an indication of how the teams are going to play. Hopefully, it will be an exciting and entertaining game for both sets of fans,” he said.

The two Soweto giants head into the derby with contrasting league records, although neither has tasted defeat in the Betway Premiership this season.

Pirates have played eight league matches, winning seven and drawing one, without suffering a defeat. They sit second on the log with 22 points.

Chiefs have also played eight matches, recording three victories and five draws, with no defeats. They occupy fifth position with 14 points.

The Buccaneers will be looking to use home advantage to maintain their impressive form, while Amakhosi will be desperate to turn their draws into victories and close the eight-point gap between the sides.

The rivalry has produced unforgettable moments over the years and Bartlett has his own special memories from the fiercely contested fixture.

He recalled enjoying a derby played at Kings Park Stadium in Durban, where his side scored after just 20 seconds.

However, his most memorable moment came at the old FNB Stadium when he scored a dramatic late equaliser against Pirates.

“I think for me it has to be the last one at the old FNB Stadium when I scored in the 94th minute. Pirates were leading 1-0 and I equalised. I probably broke a few Pirates hearts on the day,” he said.

With another chapter of the historic rivalry about to unfold, Bartlett believes supporters could be treated to plenty of goals.

Asked for his score prediction, he backed an entertaining stalemate.

“I’m going for an entertaining 2-2 draw. I think both teams have an opportunity to win this game, so I’m sitting on the fence. A 2-2 draw would be suitable for both teams,” he said.
