Lou DiBella has criticized boxing as a whole when commenting on Oliver McCall’s next fight.

Yesterday, McCall made weight ahead of the 61-year-old’s boxing match with Jeremiah Williams in Nashville, Tennessee.

The former WBC heavyweight champion, who shocked the division by beating Lennox Lewis in 1994, is now just a matter of hours away from stepping back inside the ring.

Following posts about McCall’s return being posted on social media, the fight received criticism from the likes of DiBella.

You can match one former fighter against one current fighter. Which two would you pick and who would win?

Lou DiBella speaks out on the current state of boxing in reaction to Oliver McCall’s return

Oliver McCall will compete in his fourth bout since making his return to the ring in 2024 following a five-year break later today.

In a post on social media, veteran promoter Lou DiBella used the former champion’s 79th professional bout to critique the current state of boxing across the board.

DiBella, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2022, argued that this is just another example of the sport he loves consistently disappointing him.

“This is immoral, dangerous, and just sad,” he wrote on X. “Take boxing these days… I can’t anymore with the whole damn thing. There’s something I smh [shake my head] about every f—— day. Used to be the guilty pleasure of sports. Now it’s just guilty.”

While he’s making the case that this shouldn’t be going ahead given McCall’s age and the health risks that this presents, some fans did argue in the replies to his post that this decision is up to the fighter.

Others countered by pointing out that it’s surprising that both of the fighters involved were even cleared to compete in Tennessee due to the medicals they would have had to pass.

McCall did have issues with booking his next fight after spending over a year away from the ring, though this wasn’t due to a commission having concerns about his safety.

His scheduled bout with 53-year-old Ike Ibeabauchi in October was canceled due to a lack of interest in the event, which isn’t surprising considering their ages.

Jeremiah Williams is of a similar age to Ibeabauchi and has far less experience than McCall, which can be seen as both a positive and negative aspect.

On one hand, Williams is not a dangerous up-and-comer who is being put in this position in order to make his name off the former heavyweight champion.

He’s also likely to have taken a lot less damage throughout his career compared to McCall, who has remarkably gone 78 pro bouts without ever being dropped.

In 35 bouts, Williams has completed a total of 138 rounds compared to McCall having 78 bouts with a staggering 445 rounds under his belt, according to BoxRec.

Not to mention the fact that McCall has competed at a much higher level as a former world champion, which means facing better and more dangerous opponents while putting your body through title fight training camps.
